Buying a used car in Pakistan is one of the biggest financial decisions most families make. Done right, you can save a huge amount. Done wrong, you end up with someone else's problem. Here is how to do it right.
Step 1 — Set Your Budget Honestly
Before you start looking, decide your maximum budget including transfer costs, insurance, and any immediate repairs. A car priced at the top of your budget often means you cannot afford to fix what breaks first. Leave a buffer of at least 10–15% for surprises.
Step 2 — Choose the Right Model
In Pakistan, parts availability is everything. Popular models like Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Suzuki Mehran have workshops on every street and cheap spare parts. Rare or imported models look attractive but a single repair can cost more than months of savings. Stick to models that have been sold in Pakistan for years.
Step 3 — Inspect the Exterior Carefully
Walk around the car in daylight. Look for uneven panel gaps (sign of accident repair), mismatched paint shades, rust around wheel arches, and dents the seller has not mentioned. Run your hand along panels — bumps under paint mean filler used to hide accident damage.
Step 4 — Check Under the Bonnet
Look for oil leaks, white residue on the oil cap (coolant mixing with oil), rusty battery terminals, and any wires that look cut or repaired. If the engine bay looks freshly pressure-washed, ask why — sellers sometimes clean engines to hide leaks.
Step 5 — Take a Proper Test Drive
Drive on a quiet road and a busy road. Listen for knocking over bumps (worn suspension), grinding when braking (worn pads), and the car pulling to one side. Test all windows, lights, air conditioning, and dashboard instruments.
Step 6 — Verify the Documents
This step is non-negotiable. The registration book seller name must match their CNIC. Engine and chassis numbers must match the book exactly. Token tax must be paid up to date. Verify the car is not stolen or under a police case. Never buy a car with unexplained document mismatches.
Step 7 — Get an Independent Mechanic Inspection
Before paying anything, take the car to a trusted mechanic — not one suggested by the seller. A proper inspection costs a small amount and can reveal issues worth many times that. This single step prevents most bad purchases.
Step 8 — Transfer Ownership Correctly
Never drive away on a handwritten receipt. Complete the official ownership transfer at the relevant authority for your city. Until the transfer is complete in your name, you have no legal ownership.
